It’s fall! Beautiful, marvelous, wonderful, awesome FALL (autumn, back to school – whatever you want to call it). I call it BOOTS TIME! Sexy short pencil skirts with boots in every color <3 <3 <3.

I’m such a sucker for the pencil skirt look with boots. And brown. BROWN boots with black skirts, yes, yes it can happen. I know all those tales of high heels and butt-raising stilettos are creeping into your mind and turning your head away from lovely boots, but no, we will stand firm (and shorter) in our boots, trudging through fall rains and, soon, winter snows, in our skirts! Our sexy smokin’ hot pencil skirts.
Should I say it?
Do I need to say it?
I can’t help myself.
I have to say it.
BOOTY-LICIOUS!
Oh gawd, I said it *facedesk*
The collective gasp from the pun-police just caused an oxygen depletion in the atmosphere.
Do I redeem myself with these:
See by Chloe Women’s 17073 Ankle Boot
We love these boots because they’re feminine and purty and have heels that make our butts lift high!
And since a pencil skirt shapes around the butt, anything that lifts it, is GOOD.
Clarks Women’s Wyld Polka Boot
Not as butt-lifting, but comfortable, and freakin versatile. It’s a hardy boot – and yet still manages to be sophisticated enough for a skirt.
Recommended with wool or houndstooth skirts (see below)
Steve Madden Women’s Annnie-L Boot
Sassy you say? You want sassy? This is my pick. It’s sassy and so adorable and screams fall.
Something for everyone in there. But there are rules, ladies. Rules abound in fashion. Because you don’t want to look frumpy.
When wearing boots with a pencil skirt, leave a little bit of skin showing. Even if it’s just an inch or a slit. Boots banging up against the hem of the skirt is not attractive!
Hiding the boots under the hem is counterproductive. And boots lifting the hem up because they’re just at the edge – just ew. Can we say ‘pucker’?
But wait, harken ye to the season… er, I mean, listen up, it’s fall, we need some FALL pencil skirt outfits!
We need scarves and wool and nommy sweaters that hug our skin and make or significant other go “LEMME UNDER THERE.” “So hot!”
>.>
<.<

Ahem….

The one thing I can always count on with a pencil skirt is that it works for all occasions (except formal ones – well, full length ones might work for that.) There’s something awesome about that a skirt that wraps around our butts like mummy tape and manages to look sexy while still looking professional. I’m talking too much. ON with the pencil skirt outfits!

Most of us have a clear idea of what to wear to work, but less of an idea of what to do when functions happen just after work. There’s not always an opportunity to change into a different outfit, and it’s often less fun to wear the same clothes to both work and, say, a sports bar with the friends or coworkers. It’s even harder if the commute is long because there’s no chance of changing clothes unless you lug around an extra set. But what if you could wear one outfit to both work and a date, or a bar, or even a nightclub? That’s the difficulty of a lot of clothes, especially when the office is conservative dress only. The ease of skirts helps a bit, but there are some skirts that can be work but not to the kid’s soccer game or a local bar. Then there’s the skirts that are perfect for the sports bar but don’t work well for a first date or a law office. The trick is finding that perfect little black pencil skirt that goes from day to evening or evening to day.

Start with the basic skirt. Black, of course, but also a skirt which can be interchanged between casual and elegant. A style that doesn’t make a casual shirt look more than what it is, but at the same time makes an elegant blouse look perfectly in place. The Shape fx Control Pencil Skirt available through Spiegal is not only stylish, sexy and sophisticated, it’s also the perfect length and it has a built in tuck system to make it look even better. The price isn’t pretty awesome as well: $39.00 – $44.00.
Work
1 – Sleek, modern and very comfortable, this lace top is perfect for under a blazer or cardigan with a belt wrapped around. It’s also easily made to into the perfect evening outfit. Tuck a fancier belt into the bag (like a satin ribbon), remove the blazer, add a little more bling and you’re ready for an evening out. Newport News Lace in Love Knit Tee Sale: $19.00
4 – If lace isn’t your style then try this blousy puffy sleeved number that looks terrific tucked in or out. This particular shirt I’d recommend a belt, something wide with a big silver buckle. If stripes isn’t your thing, it also comes in a variety of colors. Spiegel Balloon Sleeve Silk Blouse Price: $64.00
Nightlife
2 – This shirt is a beautiful, stylish and sweet little number for an upper scale nightclub or bar. A simple gold pendant is the way I would go with jewelry but it has such great features it doesn’t need much else. It can also double as a top for work, which makes it a double whammy like the first lace blouse. It’s young and fresh but not too much so. And I love the little rhinestone buttons – it adds bling without being garish. Vintage Holiday Sheer Black Lace Top Rhinestone Buttons Price: $19.99
Casual
7 – At first glance this picture seems to have a black shirt with polka dots, but in reality those are little gold metal studs. The overall effect of a shirt like this is to be casual but also a little more than that. In other words, wear it to the mall or just lunch with the rest of the girls. It’s comfortable but still trendy and not too casual. It’s like the baby bear’s bed; just right. Kenneth Cole Womens Studded Blouse Price:$69.00
Really Casual
6 – Think you can’t wear a cotton striped t-shirt with this pencil skirt? Well, you can. You can even doll it up a bit and add a big belt or small one as you tuck it in or out. With a pair of high heel wedge sneakers in black, this outfit will look amazingly cute. The t’s, as you can see, come in a variety of colors but all have that black strip which makes it match perfectly with the skirt. The price is a little steep, but I’m willing to pay for good quality – how about you? Especially in a t-shirt because I wash them so often without thought to temperature and fading. The better made, the longer lasting. Striped Crew-neck Tee Price:$59.00
Formal
This is the most difficult, if not impossible, way to use a pencil skirt of any style. If it’s a long satin, maybe, but if it’s short there’s a tougher time. The bottom line is that the only skirt fabrics that will work with this are chiffon, silk and satin. Therefore a formal outfit is impossible with just any black pencil skirt. But, semi-formal is a possibility – and not too difficult.
Semi-formal
Imagine a skirt that has gone from all the of the above to semi-formal with the simple change of a shirt and maybe one change of shoes. If you buy the right high heel shoes or flats, this one skirt can function for whatever purposes you need. By far the semi-formal and casual shirts are my favorite, not that I don’t adore the other pieces, but maybe it’s the fact that it shows the skirt’s versatility – who knows. All I can say is this little ruffled silk blouse is perfect for a semi-formal event. I wouldn’t even hesitate to wear it to a wedding.
5 – This bebe Silk Ruffle Blouse Price: $79.00 will work for parties, dates, weddings or nightclubs but black is the only color left available since this posting so don’t hesitate!
One skirt, one heckuva lot of outfits! <3

The rule is never outshine the bride, but look as damn good as possible while not trying to do that. A bit of color, because most weddings are in spring and summer. Soft colors that aren’t the usual fare for wedding colors (most brides choose red, blue, white etc). A little sunny, a little shiny, a little sassy all wrapped into a lot of pretty.

So there it is, one skirt, all sorts of outfits and all wearable to the office or on date night with the husband/boyfriend/girlfriend. Leave a comment if you want to tell me something is ew or perfect or wow or just plain too awesome for words.
We all have that perfect skirt in our closet. It may or may not be a pencil skirt, but it’s almost always black or denim. Usually it’s an A-line skirt with a perfect hem above or just at the knee, but hopefully I’m about to change your mind.
The single best skirt a woman can own is a black pencil skirt, and here’s why: it’s versatile, it’s sexy, it’s classic and it’s wearable by all sizes and shapes. The advantage of the pencil skirt is that it’s translates from day to night, looks feminine but still powerful and it’s flattering. While an A-line skirt has most of those qualities, it lacks the power and structure that the pencil skirt style has in spades. So now that I have you convinced to add this gem of a clothing item to your closet – I do have you convinced right? Let’s talk about which length, style and how it should fit.
The purpose of a pencil skirt is not to hug your every curve, though some do. Even when going for a basic black the style to choose will be one that can be worn on multiple occasions. While the skin tight skirt might seem like a good idea at the time, it’ll only translate to certain functions. What you want to look for is a skirt that can be sexy when you want it sexy, classy when you want to go to the office, powerful if you have to go to a board meeting and casual when you just want to hang out with the girls.
- Start with a skirt either at or above the knee by only an inch. Anything shorter and it’s iffy for the office, anything longer and there’s a risk of looking too short. Long lengths and short lengths also go in and out of style, but knee length is appropriate throughout one’s lifetime.
- Pick a fabric that translates well for casual, business and even evening wear. This is easier than it sounds. Gabardine, worsted wool, polyester and cotton/Lycra can last throughout the seasons, depending on the style will last for years and will work for all different events.
- If you want a skirt that will continue to be fashionable every year stick with a basic style; no ruffles, no strips or any other designs which fluctuate in trend, unless you’re fine with a skirt that can only be worn in spurts.
The right hem, the right color, the right style and your basic black pencil skirt will last for years to come. It will become your skirt of choice for work and for play. It’s one of those closet imperatives like the little black dress or the perfect warm sweater. Welcome to style!
The web is an enormous marketplace to wade through in order to find a product. Not only does one have to type a search into every site visited, they have to find the sites that carry what they’re looking for in sufficient quantities to have a wide array of styles. Some women prefer long, some short, some high waisted and some low rise styles, but not all websites have exactly what the shopper has in mind. I’ve waded through hundreds of sites for you to find where to buy the best of the best black pencil skirt styles which are both expensive looking and inexpensive to own and some that may break the bank but are definitely worth the investment. While the beginning of this article will highlight some styles, if you want to scroll to the end and just shop, that’s an option as well. For now I’ll start with my personal favorite black pencil skirt.
This seventies inspired look, which is just as much at home in this century, has all the class and sophistication of a boardroom executive and all the sex appeal to wear in the local bar and still get noticed by both sexes. The greatest factor which makes it stand out is the small band at the bottom of the skirt that both adds a subtle design and makes the skirt that much more interesting.
Skirt: Tailored skirt inspired by the 70′s business chic
Blouse: Ruffled white blouse
Belt: Skinny gold belt 3/4 inch wide
Shoes: The shoes were impossible to find – and since they were so awesome I spent a long time looking. But I found an equally awesome substitute.

What’s good about Amazon.com: A wide variety of items which can all be purchased in one area, low prices, free shipping more often than not and a variety of merchants who compete against one another.
What’s not so good about Amazon.com: Not enough buyers use the rating system. It’s difficult to judge merchants and merchandise when there’s no reviews, but the reviews which are there are normally given a lot of thought. I encourage anyone making a purchase from the site to read the reviews before doing so. Most are enlightening to say the least. They’ll tell you if the item is off size (fits too small or too big), if one merchant is better than another and other important details.
Shopping online is a bit like a craps shoot most of the time, so finding merchandise is usually either a few clicks or hours of perusing for just the right outfit. Finding one spot that houses the bulk of styles is helpful. While Amazon does that to some extent, there are tons of other styles.
Shopbop.com is a great place to buy the trendiest clothes on the market. It’s not for the faint of pocketbook but if you want quality clothes that will stand the test of time in terms of fashion and wear, then it’s a good place to look around.
Skirt: Diane von Furstenberg Margrita Skirt Price $245.00 USD
Blouse: Alexander Wang Slender Dress Shirt Price: $325.00 USD
Shoes: Giuseppe Zanotti Zip Front Cutout Booties Price: $775.00 USD.
Hat: No exact match on the website, but going with the pencil skirt theme you could work with the cloche hat of the twenties or a fedora of the forties. I chose to highlight the former: Eugenia Kim Ava Cloche Price: $255.00 USD.
Handbag: Marc by Marc Jacobs Catty Q Franny Tote Price: $328.00 USD.
As I said, not for the faint of pocket book, but those are clothes that will last you season after season and never go out of style. Even the shoes, though trendy, will look great in ten years. A basic black heel with a zipper front as design doesn’t have anything funky enough to be termed out of style.
For those of us with small, or large, pocket books, here are some great sites and skirts at all kinds of prices:
Black is one of those colors which make life so much easier. It goes with everything, it suits just about any occasion (even weddings if done right), it’s a power color but it also works when you need a more casual outfit. It all depends on what shirt, what shoes, what accessories you pair with it. Finding what to wear with a black pencil skirt isn’t quite so easy. It’s inherently a sophisticated skirt style, which makes it ideal for suits and nights out on the town. Even a cotton pencil skirt can manage to look classy and elegant if paired with a button down cardigan that’s belted in the middle. So this article will delve into the world’s best fashion statement: the black pencil skirt.

Skirt: Sexy, fun, sophisticated, this skirt can dress up or downKnee Length Tiered Sleek Stretch Skirt ( Choose Black, Charcoal or Brown )
Top: Mango Women’s Cropped Cardigan. While the jewel beading is fun, it doesn’t lend too much formality to the style of the cardigan. This design is perfect for casual wear with a white Lycra screw neck shirt. (no longer available *sadface* try this cute little cardigan instead: Mango Women’s Cardigan)

In fashion it’s not always about matching exact colors as I’ve done above. Strangely enough mixing and matching sometimes makes the most interesting outfits. Stripes with solids is nice, but stripes can look great with a print as well. It all depends on the style. And while you have a solid basic black pencil skirt you can do amazing things with it to make it stand out or use it to make fashion risks with the rest of the ensemble. The great thing about black is that it looks awesome with muted and bright colors alike. I’d recommend a strong red or a soft ivory silk blouse and even pour a houndstooth jacket over that combination. Pull it together with a black belt and shoes and you’ll look amazing.
Stay tuned for more of what to wear with your black pencil skirt!
